Provenance: Spink, July 1946.

William Mattox was was born in the Parish of Beer, Devon, and enlisted into the 28th Foot at Plymouth on 2 September 1803, aged 23, for ‘Life’. He was discharged on 5 February 1822, in consequence of chronic hepatitis and general bad health, and ‘was wounded when in action at Barrosa, 5 March 1811, in the left hand, also at Vittoria, 21 June 1913, in right knee and left side.’
