Switzerland, Confederation Helvetique, Medal of Honour of 10 August 1792, iron central disc with outer silver band, the obverse featuring the Swiss federal coat of arms, with ‘Treue und Eure’ (Faithful and Honour) above, the reverse dated ‘X August MDCCXCII’ within laurel wreath, the edge engraved ‘Joh Franz Bulliard’, with integral suspension loop and later ring suspension, good very fine, rare £1,000-£1,400

The Medal of Honour was authorised on 7 August 1817 and was awarded to 395 surviving Officers and men of the Swiss Guard who were present during the attack on the Tuileries Palace in Paris during the French Revolution. Of the approximately 1,200 Guards defending the Palace that day, approximately 600 were killed or massacred after surrendering. A further 160 or so died in prison of their wounds, or were later killed during the September massacres that followed.
