Army L.S. & G.C., G.V.R., 1st issue 4297 Sq. S. Mjr: I. In F. & G. W. S. Chappell. 2/D. Gds.) very fine, scarce to rank £40-£50

Walter Septimus Chappell was born in Lambeth, London and attested for the Corps of Hussars of the Line at Dublin in October 1893. He was posted to the 3rd Hussars, and advanced to Corporal in December 1895. Chappell was discharged in November the following year, before re-engaging for service with the 2nd Dragoon Guards in February 1897.

Chappell advanced to Squadron Sergeant Major Instructor in Fencing and Gymnasia in April 1904, and was posted to the 2nd Reserve Regiment of Cavalry in August 1914 (awarded L.S. & G.C. October 1912 - his full entitlement). He transferred to the 4th Reserve Regiment of Dragoons in February 1917, and was discharged, 28 March 1919, having served 22 years and 38 days.
