John Joseph Hammerton was born in Kingston-on Thames, Surrey, in 1858. He attested as a Boy for the 29th Foot at London in August 1871. Hammerton advanced to Corporal in October 1884, and to Colour Sergeant in December 1889 (awarded L.S. & G.C. in October 1889). He was discharged, 8 May 1898, having served 26 years and 253 days with the Colours.

Hammerton was awarded the M.S.M. with an annuity of £10 per year in April 1924. He was 66 years of age, and it was almost 26 years after his retirement. In later life he resided at 31 Bath Road, Worcester, and he died in September 1938.
