Five: Lieutenant R. R. Ranson, South African Air Force, late South African Armoured Corps and South African Engineer Corps

1939-45 Star; Italy Star; Defence and War Medals 1939-45; Africa Service Medal, all officially named ‘228976 R. R. Ranson’, good very fine (5) £60-£80

Roy Rowell Ranson was born on 14 April 1922, and attested for the South African Engineer Corps on 9 February 1942. He transferred to the Cadet Company on 13 September of that year, and was commissioned temporary Second Lieutenant, General List, South African Engineer Corps, on 10 March 1943. He served during the Great War in the Middle East from 27 August 1943, and was promoted Lieutenant on 10 September 1943. He transferred to the South African Air Force (Anti-Aircraft Branch) on 1 April 1944, and was posted to the Central Mediterranean Forces on 15 August of that year. Transferring again to the South African Armoured Corps (Infantry) on 15 February 1945, he returned to South Africa on 28 January 1946, and was released on 17 February 1946. The following year he was appointed Lieutenant, General Duties Branch (Anti-Aircraft), South African Air Force, and served in various Anti-Aircraft units until transferring to the Reserve of Officers on 5 January 1953.
