Four: Private J. K. Schorn, Umvoti Mounted Rifles, late Prince Alfred’s Guard, South African Forces, who was taken Prisoner of War at Tobruk on 20 June 1942

John Keiffler Schorn was born in Port Elizabeth on 15 October 1908, and attested for Prince Alfred’s Guard on 15 July 1940. He transferred to the Umvoti Mounted Rifles in January 1941, and served with them during the Second World War in North Africa from 14 August 1941. He was captured and taken Prisoner of War at Tobruk on 20 June 1942, along with virtually his entire Regiment, and was held initially in the Italian Prisoner of War Camp P.G. 65 at Gravina. He was released on 18 May 1945, and was discharged on 25 September 1945. He died in Natal on 2 March 1978.

Sold with various letters and postcards sent by the recipient to his son, including some whilst a Prisoner of War; and copied service papers.
