Five: Private C. C. Chalinder, 1st South African Infantry, later Sergeant, South African Air Force, who was wounded in action during the defence of Hill 60 in Flanders on 13 April 1918

Cecil Charles Chalinder was born in Port Elizabeth on 14 May 1899 and attested for the 12th South African Infantry on 15 December 1915. He served in German East Africa in 1916, before returning to South Africa on 25 December 1916 and joining the South African Overseas Expeditionary Force on 23 March 1917. He served with the 1st South African Infantry on the Western Front from 13 July 1917, and was wounded in action with multiple gun shot wounds during the defence of Hill 60 in Flanders on 13 April 1918, which necessitated his left leg being amputated. He was discharged medically unfit on 8 May 1920. He subsequently formed part of the South African contingent of Ex-Servicemen at the Coronation of H.M. King George VI in 1937, and saw further service at home with the South African Air Force during the Second World War, where he was advanced Sergeant in July 1942.
