Pair: Engine Room Artificer Third Class G. Highet, Royal Navy, who was killed in action when H.M.S. Torrent was mined in the North Sea, 23 December 1917

George Highet was born in Everton, Liverpool, on 9 September 1886, and joined the Royal Navy as an Engine Room Artificer Fourth Class on 12 June 1916. Posted to the Destroyer H.M.S. Torrent on 17 February 1917, he was promoted Engine Room Artificer Third Class on 30 July 1917, and was killed in action on 23 December 1917, when Torrent struck a mine in the North Sea, near the Maas light buoy off the Dutch coast, whilst going to meet a convoy. Only three of her crew survived. Highet was amongst those killed, and is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial.
