Philip Hartland attested for the Royal Engineers and served during the Great War on the Western Front from 18 March 1915. He was admitted to No. 5 Stationary Hospital on 25 May 1915, and transferred to Class ‘Z’ Reserve on 2 August 1919.

Nghare Grace Hartland, the daughter of Philip Hartland, was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the Women’s Royal Army Corps on 24 April 1952, with seniority from 20 September 1951, and was promoted Lieutenant on 20 September 1953, and Captain on 20 September 1957. She resigned her commission on 1 January 1959.
