Christie John Nellthorp was born in Portsmouth on 1 April 1876 and joined the Royal Navy as a Ship’s Steward’s Boy on 15 January 1891. He was advanced Ship’s Steward on 20 January 1899, and was posted to H.M.S. Fox on 10 September 1901, and served in her during operations on and off the coast of Somaliland from 14 February to 17 April 1903; from 5 July to 14 September 1903; and from 8 March to 11 May 1904. He transferred to H.M.S. Albion on 26 February 1907, and was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 13 April 1909. Advanced Warrant Steward on 1 October 1915, he served during the Great War in the Battleship H.M.S. Glory from 23 October 1917 (also entitled to a 1914-15 Star trio). He was commissioned Paymaster Lieutenant on 1 November 1926, before being placed on the retired list in 1928, and was advanced Paymaster Lieutenant Commander on 1 November 1934.
