Joseph Clase was born in Brighton, Sussex, on 4 August 1866, and joined the Royal Navy as a Band Boy on 22 August 1881. Appointed Stoker 2nd Class in H.M.S. Iron Duke on 1 February 1887, he was promoted Stoker in the same ship on 1 August of that year, and transferred to H.M.S. Porpoise on 23 April 1903, serving in her during operations on and off the coast of Somaliland from 3 June to 17 August 1903. He was shore pensioned on 30 September 1904, and joined the Royal Fleet Reserve on 1 October of that year. He served throughout the Great War in H.M.S. Vernon.
