John Hurrell was born in Callington, Cornwall, on 18 February 1877, and joined the Royal Navy as a Stoker 2nd Class on 13 July 1896. Advanced Stoker on 1 July 1897, whilst serving in H.M.S. Magnificent, he transferred to H.M.S. Harrier on 9 March 1901, and served in her during operations on and off the coast of Somaliland from 9 to 30 November 1902, from 20 to 22 December 1902, and from 13 to 16 March 1903. Transferring to H.M.S. Sapphire on 8 February 1905, he was promoted Stoker 1st Class on 1 July 1906. He transferred to the Royal Fleet Reserve on 2 August 1908, and served during the Great War as a Stoker 1st Class in H.M.S. Doris from 2 August 1914 to 15 January 1917, before being Shore Demobilised on 18 October 1919.
