Pair: Stoker C. Fryer, Royal Navy

Egypt and Sudan 1882-89, dated reverse, 1 clasp, Alexandria 11th July (C. Fryer. Stkr. H.M.S. “Invincible”) light pitting from Star; Khedive’s Star, 1882, unnamed as issued, therefore nearly very fine (2) £140-£180

Provenance: Captain K. J. Douglas-Morris Collection, Dix Noonan Webb, October 1996 (Egypt and Sudan Medal sold as a single).

Charles Fryer was born in Hove, Sussex, in January 1854. He joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 1st Class in H.M.S. Hector, in January 1872, becoming an Ordinary Seaman 2nd Class in February 1873, one month before being drafted from her. On 1 December 1873, whilst aboard H.M.S. Spiteful (1873-77) Fryer’s request to join the Engineering Branch was approved, and he was made a Stoker. He subsequently served in this rate aboard H.M. Ships Asia (1877-79), Lord Warden (1879-80) and Invincible (1882-85). Fryer was deprived of one Good Conduct Badge in 1884, which appears to have lost him his chance of earning a L.S. & G.C. medal. Subsequently served aboard H.M. Ships Vernon (1886-88) and Alexandra (1891-92) where he was pensioned to shore on 28 February 1892.
