General Service 1918-62, 1 clasp, Palestine 1945-48 (Major E. Hindmarch. R.E.) nearly extremely fine £240-£280

Ernest Hindmarch was commissioned Second Lieutenant into the 52nd Lowland Division, Royal Engineers (Territorial Army) on 24 March 1937.

In 1944 he was serving with the 2nd Battalion Leicestershire Regiment who were of the 71st Column of the Chindits. He was in command of a Half Commando Platoon of the Battle Group (the other Half being H.Q. and Admin). He is confirmed as being with the 2nd Battalion for at least March to June 1944 and no doubt would have been heavily involved in Operation Thursday.

After the War he was in command of 3 Parachute Airborne Squadron as a Temporary Major in Palestine from December 1946 to November 1947. During this period there were disturbances and casualties caused by Leumi and the Stern Gang. His unit went on to become the 9 Parachute Royal Engineer Squadron.

Hindmarch transferred to the Reserve of Officers on 2 September 1959, and was granted the Honorary rank of Major.

Sold with copied medal roll and war diary nominal rolls from 1944.
