William Joseph Farr was born in Paddington, London, on 25 October 1885 and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on 17 November 1902. Posted to H.M.S. Perseus on 22 October 1903, he served in her during operations on and off the coast of Somaliland from 7 November 1903 to 19 March 1904, and was advanced Able Seaman in the same ship on 24 March 1905. He was discharged at Portsmouth on 28 December 1906.
