Approximately 73 Ashantee Medals with clasp Coomassie awarded to the Royal Marines, of which 40 were borne in H.M.S.
Active.

Walter Sell was born in Great Dunmow, Essex, in 1848 and attested for the Royal Marines at Chelmsford, Essex, on 4 June 1867, having previously served in the Essex Rifles Militia. He served in H.M.S. Active during the Ashantee War from 30 December 1873 to 23 March 1874, and was discharged on 22 June 1888, after 21 years and 20 days’ service.
