Military General Service 1793-1814, 6 clasps, Martinique, Albuhera, Badajoz, Salamanca, Vittoria, Orthes (George Matthews, 7th Foot.) naming lightly rubbed, lower carriage repaired and possibly reconstituted from a disc, medal otherwise nearly extremely fine £2,000-£2,400

Provenance: Baldwin, February 1938; Sotheby, November 1977.

George Matthews was born in the Parish of Barton, Yorkshire, and enlisted into the 7th Foot on 24 April 1805, a labourer by trade. He was discharged from the regiment at ‘Camp near Paris’ on 13 September 1815, and finally discharged from the Army at York Depot on 13 November 1815, in consequence of ‘Gun shot wound of left shoulder’. This wound was most likely received at Orthes as he is shown ‘sick absent’ for the two musters after that battle.

Sold with copied discharge papers.
