Julius Russell Brett was born in Glasgow, in August 1899. He joined the Royal Navy as Boy 2nd Class, before being reclassified as Boy Telegraphist in January 1915. Great War service included in H.M. Ships: Marlborough (August 1915 - October 1916, and was present with her at the Battle of Jutland), Leda, Speedwell and Gossamer.

Brett advanced to Leading Telegraphist, and transferred to the Fleet Air Arm upon it’s formation. Subsequent service included with aircraft carriers, H.M.S.
Furious and H.M.S. Eagle. Brett was awarded the L.S. & G.C. whilst serving with the cruiser H.M.S. Cornwall, 16 January 1939.
