London Gazette 2 December 1919:
‘During the operations near Hooge, on 28th September, 1918, when his company was the leading company of the attack, he led his men with great coolness and courage, and kept complete control. On the 30th, near Gheluwe, he took command of his platoon when the platoon sergeant was wounded, and the success of the company was undoubtedly due to his gallantry and initiative, he and his platoon capturing four farms defended by machine guns and snipers. Throughout he set a fine example to all ranks.’
