‘For great gallantry and devotion to duty, especially at Buzancy on 28th July 1918. When unable to get his Stokes’ mortar into action owing to casualties, he advanced into the village with the infantry. Here he formed a party of moppers-up, inflicting severe casualties on the enemy who still held the ruins. His conduct throughout the day and throughout the whole period in question was admirable.’
