A Great War M.C. attributed to Second Lieutenant Arthur Hadden, 53rd Sikhs F.F., who was killed in action at Dajailah Redoubt in March 1916

Military Cross, G.V.R., the reverse privately inscribed ‘Sec. Lt. Arthur Hadden 53rd Sikhs F.F. Sheikh Sa’ad 6th Jan. 1916 Fort Chibibat Wadi 13th Jan. 1916 Killed in action at Dajailah Redoubt 13th March 1916’, mounted on original investiture pin in its original case of issue, the case a little scuffed, otherwise extremely fine £400-£500

Arthur Hadden, 53rd Sikhs, ‘who was killed on March 8 in Meospotamia, aged 23, was the second son of Mr Frank J. Hadden and of Mrs Hadden, of Hunugalla, Ceylon. He was wounded during the operations in the Persian Gulf in January last.’ (The Times, Tuesday, March 14, 1916 refers).

‘Lieutenant Frank J. Hadden, Remount Squadron, Egypt, died of pneumonia at Giza Hospital, Cairo, on May 5. He was born in 1861, and educated at Rugby, and was for many years tea-planting in Ceylon. His name was well known in connection with racing and polo and all sports. He obtained a commission in the Remounts in July, 1915, and has been working in Egypt since that date. His second son, Second Lieutenant Arthur Hadden, 53rd Sikhs, was killed on March 8.’ (The Times, Wednesday, May 10, 1916 refers).

Lieutenant Arthur Hadden is remembered with honour on the Basra Memorial, Iraq.
