A Great War M.C. group of four awarded to Captain L. A. F. Ireland, Royal Sussex Regiment, late Royal Engineers

Military Cross, G.V.R., the reverse privately engraved, ‘Lt. Leonard A. F. Ireland, March 16th 1918 / Ypres 31st July 1917’; in its case of issue; 1914-15 Star (58143 2 Cpl. L. A. F. Ireland, R.E.); British War and Victory Medals, with M.I.D. oak leaves (Capt. L. A. F. Ireland), together with a Royal Sussex Regiment locket containing portrait photograph, a gymnasium prize medal and two ‘pips’, good very fine or better (4) £700-£900

Leonard Archibald Ireland first went to France as a 2nd Corporal in the Royal Engineers in July 1915. Subsequently commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Sussex Regiment in March 1916, he was awarded the M.C. and mentioned in despatches (London Gazette 4 January 1917, refers).
