A Second World War North Africa operations M.M. group of six awarded to Gunner A. Maycock, Royal Artillery

M.M. London Gazette 25 November 1943. The immediate recommendation states:

‘On 5 April, near Saouf, Gunner Maycock was part of the crew of a tank occupying an Observation Post at the front edge of a wood close to two haystacks. He had been ordered out of the tank to prepare breakfast when heavy fire was opened on the tank and wood by some 88mm. guns.

Gunner Maycock had no cover and rounds were falling all around him. The tank was temporarily withdrawn and Gunner Maycock was later able to rejoin it. After some 10 minutes a new Observation Post was occupied and Gunner Maycock continued his duties of laying a line about 200 yards forward from the same wood. This line, in full view of the enemy, had to be repaired shortly after as it was damaged by fire which spread from the two haystacks which had been set on fire by enemy shelling.

Gunner Maycock showed considerable courage and zeal on this occasion and throughout the period from Mareth to the end of hostilities.’
