Military Cross, G.V.R., reverse contemporarily inscribed ‘Captain C. C. Newman, The Hampshire Regt., 1917’, in fitted case of issue, extremely fine £250-300

M.C. London Gazette 16 September 1918 ‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during an enemy attack. He showed great coolness under heavy shell fire, and it was largely due to his determined leadership of his company that the attack was repulsed.’

Captain Chafen Cecil Newman was killed in action in France and Flanders on 4 September 1918 whilst serving with the 15th Battalion, Hampshire Regiment, attached Hampshire Yeomanry. Her is buried at Voormezeele Enclosure No. 3 Cemetery, Leper, West Vlaanderen, Belgium.
