A Second Afghan War C.B. pair awarded to Major-General William Hichens, Royal Engineers

The Most Honourable Order of The Bath, C.B. (Military) breast badge in 22 carat gold and enamels, hallmarked London 1821, with gold swivel-bar suspension and gold ribbon buckle; Afghanistan 1878-80, no clasp (Lt. Col., R.E.) mounted as worn, together with companion pair of mounted miniatures, good very fine (4) £1000-1200

William Hichens was first commissioned in the Bengal Engineers on 9 December 1850; Lieutenant, 3 August 1855; Captain, 27 August 1858; Major, 5 July 1872; Lieutenant-Colonel, 30 March 1876; Colonel, 30 March 1881; Major-General, 1 July 1881. During the Second Afghan War he was Commanding Royal Engineer, 2nd Division, Kandahar Field Force, during the first campaign, taking part in the advance on and occupation of Kandahar, and served in the same capacity in the Kandahar Field Force during the second campaign (Mentioned in despatches, awarded C.B.). Major-General William Hichens, C.B., died in 1888. (See lots 1272 and 1388 for related family medals).
