Three: Captain S. J. Hutchinson, 18th London Regiment

S. J. Hutchinson was commissioned into the London Irish in July 1912 and was serving as a Lieutenant in ‘E’ Company, 1st London Irish Rifles on the outbreak of hostilities in August 1914. Going with the Battalion to France as a Captain in March 1915, he returned home in October of the same year to take up appointment as Chief Recruiting Officer at City Hall, Belfast. In July 1916 he was posted to the 3rd Battalion and in May 1917 appears to have been on attachment in a military guise to the Royal Flying Corps. Hutchinson was latterly attached to the British Military Mission in the U.S.A. and was released in September 1921.

In civilian life, Hutchinson was for many years a Director of J. B. Ferguson Ltd., and also of another well known engineering firm, Hutchinson, Haddow and Co. His brother, Oliver, was instrumental in assisting John Logie Baird invent the television (see Lot 1297).
