Three: Captain C. A. Bradford, Yorkshire Regiment, attached Nigeria Regiment, drowned in April 1917 when returning from Nigeria in the S.S. Abosso, when she was torpedoed and sunk by a German submarine

Cecil Aubrey Bradford was born on 20 February 1886 at Thuborough House, near Holsworthy, Devon and educated at Wellington College and Sandhurst. He was gazetted into the Yorkshire Regiment on 7 November 1906 with the rank of 2nd Lieutenant and joined the 2nd battalion in South Africa in January 1907. When the 2nd battalion returned from South Africa in March 1909 he transferred to the 1st battalion who were then serving in Egypt, subsequently attached to the Camel Corps at Khartoum, with whom he served until the battalion moved to India in February 1912. He was seconded for service under the Colonial Office in November 1913, and attached to the Nigeria Regiment with whom he saw active service with the West Africa Frontier Force in the Cameroons 1914-15.

Captain Bradford left Lagos on 5 April 1917 aboard the S.S.
Abosso and was drowned when this liner was torpedoed without warning on 24 April 1917. He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Hollybrook Memorial. Sold with copied photograph of recipient and further research detail.
