Claude Bertram Elbrow was born in Stoke on 5 December 1888, son of Engineer Rear-Admiral George Elbrow. He joined the Royal Navy as a Midshipman on 15 February 1905, gaining 3 months time on passing out of Britannia; Sub-Lieutenant, 15 April 1908; Lieutenant, 31 December 1910; Lieutenant-Commander, 31 December 1918; Retired Commander, 30 October 1929. As a specialist Navigator and Pilot he served during the Great War in
Andromache, Conquest and Dragon, mostly in the North and Baltic Seas. He was commended by the Admiralty for good service on 15 June 1918 when the light cruiser Conquest was mined. Placed on the retired list in October 1929, he shortly afterwards became Assistant Port Officer at Basrah. Recalled in August 1939, he was admitted to R.N. Hospital, Chatham, in October 1942, suffering from angina, and died on 27 November 1943. Sold with copy service record.
