Three: Lieutenant J. B. Hichens, King’s Royal Rifle Corps, killed in action on the Somme in 1916

1914-15 Star (Lieut., K.R. Rif. C.); British War and Victory Medals (Lieut.) in their named card boxes of issue; together with related family medals, comprising British War and Victory Medals (E. A. Hichens, V.A.D.) with four various Red Cross profficiency medals, and a French silver medallion, ‘Bienfaisance’ (A. Hichens, Esq., Fétes de 1902. Les Oeuvres Françaises de Londres. Lieutenant James Byrne Hichens, son of John Knill Jope Hichens, was killed in action on 15 July 1916, whilst serving with the 16th Battalion, King’s Royal Rifle Corps. On this day the battalion attacked High Wood, on the Somme, and suffered heavy casualties. It was the battalion’s first major action of the war (See Lots 1379 and 1388 for related family medals).
