Four: Corporal J. J. Wilke, 11th South African Infantry, late Kritszinger Commando, Boer Forces and Midland Scouts

Anglo-Boer War Medal 1899-1902 (Burger); 1914-15 Star (Pte., Midlands Scouts); British War and Victory Medals (10380 Cpl., 3-S.A.I. Bde.) polished, about very fine or better (4) £80-100

Johannes Joachim Wilke is verified as having served in Commandant P. Kritszinger’s Commando during the Boer War and was awarded his Anglo-Boer War Medal in March 1932 (official records refer). During the Great War he was taken on the strength of the 3rd South African Infantry Brigade in March 1916, embarked for East Africa that April, and was posted to the 11th South African Infantry two months later. Returning to Durban at the end of the same year, Wilke was discharged as ‘temporarily unfit’, but he re-attested with the Military Labour Bureau and was embarked for Dar-es-Salaam in March 1917. Again returning to Durban in May 1918, his final stint of service was in Mozambique and he was discharged back at Roberts Heights in November 1919.
