Robert Lowe was born at Tweedmouth, Northumberland, and attested at Berwick-on-Tweed on 11 March 1893, aged 19 years 6 months. He served with the 1st Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders, during the occupation of Crete in 1897, and in the Nile Expedition of 1898, including the battles of the Atbara and Khartoum. During the Boer War he served with the Mounted Infantry Company of the Seaforths, and was discharged at Inverness on 10 March 1905.
