Simon Peel was born in Bradford and enlisted in the 13th Light Infantry at Leeds in May 1836, aged 18 years. In his subsequent career of 22 years with the Colours, he was present under Colonel Dennie at the defence of Jellalabad between November 1841 to April 1842, and was one of approximately 170 men of his regiment to retain his ‘Mural Crown’ Medal, rather than apply for the ‘Flying Victory’ type. Also a veteran of the Cabul operations, and the recipient of the L.S. & G.C. Medal, he was discharged in May 1859.
