Lumley Graham entered the Army by purchase in 1847 as an Ensign in the 43rd Regiment. Purchasing the rank of Lieutenant in 1851, he served in the Kaffir War of 1851-53. A Captain by purchase in 1854, Lumley served with the 41st Regiment in the Crimea and was for some time A.D.C. to Major-General Eyre. He was severely wounded on 29.8.1855 which resulted in the amputation of his right arm. He was given the brevets of Major and Lieutenant-Colonel and awarded the Legion of Honour 5th Class.
