Army L.S. & G.C., V.R., small letter reverse (2187 Serjt. James Towey, Coast Bde. R.A.) slack suspension post with traces of attempted tightening, otherwise very fine £30-40

James Towey was born at Drumcliff, Co. Sligo and enlisted in the Royal Artillery in December 1846, aged 18 years. In his subsequent career of 37 years with the Colours, he witnessed no active service, spending much of his time in 6th Brigade, North Irish Division, R.A., and a two year stint, between 1868-70, as a civilian, having first been discharged as a Sergeant in the former year.
