Frederick Hope was born in Bolton in 1876. A saddler by trade, he enlisted into the Army in 1895. Prior to the Boer War he served in the U.K., India, Egypt, Malta, Sudan and Crete, earning the Queen’s Sudan and Khedive’s Sudan Medal with clasp ‘Khartoum. In South Africa, the 2nd battalion Lancashire Fusiliers formed part of the 11th Brigade under General E. R. P. Woodgate and greatly distinguished itself in weeks leading up to Spion Kop where it formed the largest contingent in that battle. Sergeant Hope was drowned crossing De Jagers Drift on 20.12.1900. Four men (Sergeant Hope, Privates Williams, Jacques and Hogan) were drowned in the crossing. Royal Humane Society Medals were awarded to Private Cannon for attempting to save the life of Private Jacques, and to Private R. Howard for saving the life of Private Ryan.
