George Henry Smart was born at Bombay on 29 April 1883, only son of Major-General G. J. Smart, R.A., who served in the Mutiny and was twice mentioned in despatches. Educated at Dover College and at the R.M.C., Sandhurst, he received his commission in the West Yorkshire Regiment in 1901, becoming Lieutenant in 1904. He served in the South African War, taking part in the operations in the Transvaal from November 1901 to May 1902, receiving the Queen’s Medal with three clasps.

At the time of the Great War, having retired from the Regular Army in 1909, he was in the 4th Battalion of the regiment, in which he had been Captain from May 1909, and was attached for active service to the 1st Battalion, Loyal North Lancashire Regiment. He was killed in action at Le Touret, France, on the 22nd December 1914, in a counter-attack made by the Germans after the retaking by us of a trench which had been lost by our men the day before.
