Ashantee 1873-74, no clasp (E. Wayte, Pte., R.M., H.M.S. Victor Eml. 73-74) minor edge bruise, very fine £100-120

Edward Wayte was born in Spondon, Derby in 1839. A basket maker by trade, he enlisted into the Royal Marine Light Infantry in 1857. From the date of his joining until 1871 his conduct was very good and he was awarded two good conduct badges. From 1871 onwards his conduct deteriorated and was several times listed in the Company Defaulters’ Book and in 1871 was sentenced to 21 days solitary confinement followed by 21 days hard labour for drunkenness and theft. He died of Erysipelas of the head and face whilst in the service in October 1877. Sold with copied service papers and death certificate.
