Baltic 1854-55 (C. Reed, R.M., H.M.S. Hawke, 1855) contemporary engraved naming, edge bruising and contact marks, otherwise about very fine £50-60

Charles Reed was born in Alburgh, Norfolk and enlisted in the Royal Marines, via the West Norfolk Militia, in May 1854, aged 18 years. Assigned to H.M.S. Hawke, he went on to witness active service in the Baltic operations before transferring to the Edinburgh in May 1856. Some ten years later, Reed had attained the rank of Corporal in the 81st Company, R.M.L.I. and re-enlisted for a further enagement of 9 years, but further research is required to establish the nature of his employment with the Corps from that date until his final discharge.
