Edwin Thomas was baptised at Calcutta in February 1823. His father was an Attorney at Law in Calcutta but sent young Edwin to France and England for his education. He was gazetted an Ensign in June 1839 and posted to the 58th Native Infantry the following September. He was posted to the 70th Native Infantry in January 1840, promoted to Lieutenant in March 1841, and served with the Army of Reserve in 1843. In the following year he served with the Army of Gwalior and was present at the action at Maharajpoor (Bronze Star). In November 1848 he was appointed Brigade Quarter-Master to the 4th Infantry Brigade, Army of the Punjab, and was present at the actions of Ramnuggur, passage of the Chenab, Chilianwalla, and Goojerat, and pursuit of the Sikhs and Afghans to Peshawar (Medal and 2 clasps). He transferred, in December 1853, to the 3rd European Regiment, and was promoted to Captain in October 1854. He served under General Wyndham at Cawnpore and was present at the attack by the Gwalior troops, and final defeat of the Force under Lord Clyde, 2nd and 6th December 1857. He was subsequently posted to the 39th Native Infantry in January 1864, and promoted to Major in March 1865, and to Lieutenant-Colonel in June 1867. He died at Lucknow on 21 October 1869.
