Almeric Walter Medler was born at Swannington, Norfolk and volunteered for military service in December 1915, but was placed on the Army Reserve until February 1916, when he was posted to the 1st Life Guards. Subsequently transferred to the Household Battalion, he went to France in November of the same year and remained there until wounded in the right shoulder on 11 May 1917. Evacuated to the Canadian General Hospital at Etaples, he returned to the U.K. for further treatment, and was transferred to the Irish Guards in January 1918. Joining his new regiment out in France that March, Medler was again wounded on 27 September, this time in the left leg, in an action at Bourlon Wood. Once more evacuated to the U.K. he was discharged in March 1919; contemporary copied documents state that he was awarded the M.M., but this requires confirmation.
