John Lydon was born at Old Pentaland, Midlothian and originally enlisted in the Black Watch at Perth in June 1917, aged 19 years. Transferring to the Irish Guards in September 1917, he was killed in action on 27 August 1918. Buried in Mory Abbey Cemetery, his personal effects were returned to his father in Scotland, among them part of a broken rosary and a damaged cigarette case.
