Michael Mahoney was born at Clonmel, Co. Tipperary and enlisted in the Irish Guards in August 1910, aged 23 years. Posted to the 1st Battalion, he served at home until going to France on 12 August 1914, where he was taken P.O.W. on 1 November and interned in Holland for the remainder of the War.
