John Clarke was posted to the 75th Regiment from 39 Brigade Depot in January 1881 and sailed with it from Malta to Egypt in August 1882, by which stage it was the 1st Battalion, Gordon Highlanders. Subsequently engaged at Tel-el-Kebir on 13 September, he again served with the Battalion in the Suakin Campaign of 1884, being present at the Battles of El-Teb and Tamaai. And in the Nile operations of 1884-85, Clarke was one of a small detachment of 2 Officers and 28 Other Ranks drawn from the Gordons to serve with the Camel Corps Mounted Infantry, and was present at Abu Klea on 17 January 1885.
