Guelphic Medal for Bravery 1815, silver (Heinr. Schlote, Quartiermastr. im Leib-Cuir. Regt.) light contact marks, otherwise good very fine and rare £1800-2200

Awarded the Guelphic Medal in the 1822 List:

‘In the violent fight at Venta del Pozo, Lieutenant Von Hugo lay wounded under his dead horse. Schlote, who was in every way courageous, helped his Lieutenant up and gave him another horse, whereby he placed himself in the greatest danger.’ (Ref Von Wissel, p178)

Lieutenant Von Hugo described his wounds in his 1829 Statement of Service for Retired Officers: ‘In the engagement of La Venta del Pozo or Villadrigo, near Quintailla de La Puente between Burgos and Valladolid in Spain, on 23rd of October 1812. I received a lance wound in the sword-arm, and a hurt in the calf of the leg, caused by the hoof-iron of a horse, entering the flesh - sundry sabre cuts on the fingers etc - also a severe contusion on the breast, produced by the fall of the enemy’s horse on my body in a heavy charge of cavalry, which occasioned spitting of blood during several years, and an asthmatic affection, which still remains.’

Henry Schlote was Troop Sergeant Major of Captain Friesland’s Troop in 1812, and was present at the Battle of Waterloo. After disbandment of the Legion in 1816 he enlisted in the Lieb-Cuirassier Regiment of the Hannoverian Army as Quartermaster, and was sent to pension on 1 August 1820. His name does not appear on the M.G.S. roll.
