79th Cameron Highlanders Feather Bonnet Converted from a Hummel bonnet c. 1830 - 45, the 12 inch high bonnet with five tails, wire framework built over the original Hummel this still with its red toorie, the badge on the wearer’s left hand side features St. Andrew and his cross and thistle sprays in die stamped unmarked silver this on a three layer black silk backing, a 20 cm white cut feather plume is lodged behind the badge, buff leather sweat band, partially detached crimson silk lining and original 1.2 cm black patent leather chin strap this detached at one end, very good condition for its age £1,000-£1,400

Note: The conversion of Hummel bonnets to feather bonnets was a gradual process commencing c. 1790, the feather bonnet is noted to be 13 inches in height in 1834 increased to 16 inches in 1847.

The ornate gilt silver and enamel plume holder of the 79th was replaced c. 1844 with the badge described on this example but including the top gilt part of the former holder, this lacking.
