John White was born in London in June 1821 and joined the Royal Navy on 14 October 1841, serving as an Ordinary Seaman in H.M.S. Malabar. Promoted Able Seaman on 5 June 1844, he transferred to H.M.S. Amazon on 12 December 1844; H.M.S. Powerful on 27 October 1848; and H.M.S. Fisgard on 9 March 1851. He was promoted Yeoman of Signals on 31 December 1853; and advanced to Quarter Master on 1 June 1859. He was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 24 December 1862, after 20 years’ service.
