William Young was born in Great Marlow, Buckinghamshire, in 1850 and attested for the 54th (West Norfolk) Regiment of Foot at Aldershot on 29 January 1868. He served with the Regiment in India from 20 October 1871 to 13 January 1886, during which time the 54th Foot was re-designated as the 2nd Battalion, Dorsetshire Regiment, and then in Aden from 14 January to 23 December 1886- despite spending nearly 15 years in India he did not take part in any campaign that qualified for a campaign medal. He was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, together with a gratuity, per Army Order 57 of 1888, and was discharged at Portsmouth on 28 January 1889, after 21 years’ service.
