Thomas Snape was born at Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire, and attested for the 5th Dragoon Guards at Sheffield, Yorkshire, on 30 May 1855. He transferred to the 7th Dragoon Guards on 30 September 1857, and served with the Regiment in India for 10 years and 40 days. He was discharged at Ballincollig, Ireland, on 3 June 1876.
