Alfred Kersley was born in Odiham, Hampshire, and joined the Royal Flying Corps on 21 January 1915. He served as an Air Mechanic Second Class during the Great War on the Western Front from 9 February 1915, transferring to the Royal Air Force on 1 April 1918. He was promoted Air Mechanic First Class on 3 May 1919, on his transfer to the R.A.F. Reserve, and was discharged on 21 January 1923.
