Robert Arthur Gillanders served during the Great War with the 18th Mounted Rifles in German South West Africa, before transferring to the 3rd South African Infantry for service on the Western Front. He was killed in action on 10 April 1918, and, having no known grave, is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
